Reggae star Smiley Culture ‘stabs himself to death’ in police raid

Eighties reggae star Smiley Culture died yesterday after apparently stabbing himself during a police drugs raid on his home.

The British musician, who had a top 20 hit with Police Officer in 1984, died from self-inflicted wounds when officers carried out an arrest warrant at the house in Warlingham, Surrey.

A spokesman from the Metropolitan police said: ‘While [police were] at the house it is believed a man suffered stab wounds and died and we are now investigating the incident.’

Culture, 48, whose real name is David Emmanuel, is thought to have asked if he could make a cup of tea before being taken to a police station for questioning.

While gone, it is thought the reggae star took a kitchen knife and stabbed himself in the chest.

Police watchdog the IPCC is investigating the death.

Emmanuel had appeared before magistrates in September charged with conspiracy to supply cocaine.
